An Overview of Qantas Airways

Qantas Airways is the national carrier of Australia, It is the largest airline in Australia in terms of fleet size, international flights and international destinations. It was founded in the Queensland outback in 1920 and it began operations in March 1921. Qantas is the third oldest airline after KLM and Avianca. It was originally named Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services and hence the acronym QANTAS. Qantas has its headquarters at the Qantas Centre in the Mascot suburb of the City of Botany Bay, Sydney, New South Wales. Qantas has its primary hubs at the Brisbane Airport, Melbourne Airport and the Sydney Airport. The airline has its secondary hubs at the Adelaide Airport, the Dubai International Airport and the Los Angeles International Airport. Qantas is one of the founding members of the Oneworld Alliance. Qantas has built for itself a reputation for excellence in safety, operational reliability, engineering and maintenance and customer service.

Fleet:

Qantas is the largest airline in Australia and thus has a massive fleet to operate its domestic and international flights. Qantas operates on a fleet of state of the art Airbus’, Boeing’s and Bombardier’s. The fleet includes Airbus A380, A330, Boeing 737-800, 787-800 Dreamliner, 717 and Bombardier Q400. Destinations:

Qantas flies to 20 domestic destinations and 21 international destinations across Africa, North and South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. In addition to these 41 destinations, Qantas along with its subsidiaries flies to a total of 65 domestic and 27 international destinations. The Top 10 destinations of Qantas include Rio de Janeiro, Austin, Dalat, San Francisco, Mexico City, St Helena Island, Barcelona, Hangzhou, San Sebastian and Melbourne.

Qantas has joined with Jet Airways in India to fly from New Delhi and Mumbai. Codeshare flights operate from Delhi to Singapore with connections from or to Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns and Darwin, Also daily codeshare flights operate from Mumbai to Singapore with connections from or to Sydney and Perth.

Cabin Classes:

 Qantas being a full cost carrier has its cabin divided into different cabin classes. On international flights the cabin is divided into four classes namely, Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First. On domestic and Trans-Tasman sectors there are only two cabin classes, Economy and Business. On Regional flights the aircrafts has only one class, Economy.

First Class on Qantas is like luxury redefined, the journey starts as you reach the airport in your complimentary chauffeur driven car. The First Class cabin offers 14 individual suites in a 1-1-1 layout, the seats face forward for take-off and sideways for dining and sleeping. Each suite has its very own 43cm monitor with a 1000 audio visual on demand programs. The cabin also has an 11 volt power outlet with each suite. The seats get converted to comfortable lie flat beds. First Class is offered on select routes and on A380s and a few 747s.

Business Class on Qantas Airways is offered on the Boeing 747, A330-300, A330-200 and the A380. Business Class on different aircrafts has different seat configurations. This class also features lie flat beds, their personal 26cm touchscreen monitor with over 400 AVOD programs.

Premium Economy is only available on Airbus A380 and all Boeing 747-400. The cabin is configured in a 2-4-2 seating arrangement. The meals offered on the Premium Economy are an upgraded version of the food served in the Economy class. Premium Economy passengers enjoy dedicated check in and boarding lanes.

Economy class is available on all mainline passenger aircrafts, the seats are comfortable and there are four self-service snack bars located in the cabins. Passengers travelling economy can check in online before they get to the airport between 24 hours and 2 hours before departure.

Onboard Entertainment:

The in-flight entertainment is referred to as “On:Q”. Passengers will now be able to view news, entertainment and lifestyle programs on board the aircraft. Premium content is available from HBO, Sky News and Foxtel.  

Baggage Allowance:

Checked in baggage allowance depends on the route and cabin class of your travel. On international flights other than those to North and South America, passengers travelling Economy are allowed to check in 30 kgs of luggage, Premium Economy and Business Class travelers are allowed to check in 40 kgs and First Class travelers are allowed to check in 50 kgs, with a weight restriction of 32 kgs per bag. Passengers may please check their baggage allowance at the time of booking to avoid any confusion.

Carry on baggage is restricted to 7 kgs per person with a restriction on the size of the bags. The size restriction is also different for different aircrafts.

Frequent Flyer Program:

Qantas’ frequent flyer program is the best in all of Australia.
