An Overview of Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines is the flag carrier of Austria. Austrian Airlines is a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. The airline was formed in 1957 and was established as Osterreichische Luftverkehrs AG by the merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways. The airline began its operations on 30th September 1957. Austrian Airlines started its domestic operations on 1st May 1963 and it began its transatlantic operations on 1st April 1969. The first transatlantic flight was operated from Vienna to New York via Brussels. Austrian Airlines has its hub and headquarters at the Vienna International Airport in Schwechat.

Austrian Airlines has a fleet of 80 aircrafts which include Airbus’, Boeing’s, Bombardier’s, Embraer’s and Fokker’s. Austrian Airlines has a global network of approximately 130 destinations. The most flights are operated to Europe with 43 destinations. Austrian Airlines operates 448 flights a week from Frankfurt to Vienna, its main destination. Austrian also operates 439 flights from Vienna to Frankfurt, 396 flights from Vienna to Zurich on a weekly basis.

Austrian Airlines became a Star Alliance member in 2000, providing passengers with seamless travel options with the help of codesharing with the members of the Star Alliance. The members include Air Canada, Air China, Air China, ANA, Lufthansa and many more airlines.

Austrian Airlines is a full cost carrier and hence it has three cabin classes namely, Business Class, First Class and Economy Class. The passengers travelling Business Class and First Class have many privileges, like Priority check in, extra luggage allowance, extra leg room and premium meals and drinks.  Seats in the Economy are very comfortable and recline upto 120 degrees.

Austrian airlines allows free check in baggage, Economy Class passengers are allowed to check in one bag of not more than 23 kgs, whereas Business Class and First class passengers are allowed to check in two bags of 23 kgs each.

Austrian Airlines has been awarded as one of the world’s top airlines at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2015. The airline was awarded the first place in the Best Airline Staff service in the Europe category, it was also awarded the first place in the Best Business Class Catering category in the domestic sector.
